Two terms from medieval philosophy have haunted me for years. They are “quidditas” and “haeccietas” (quiddity & haecceity), meaning “whatness” and “thisness.” You touch on two sorts of beauty suggested by these terms: that of qualities that make a thing the type of thing it is, and that of qualities that make a thing the unique individual thing it is. The poet Gerard Manley Hopkins used the term “inscape” for the “thisness” of things, and considered it the greater beauty. I was delighted to find acknowledgement of both in your clip for March 25.
I love reading these airtlecs because they’re short but informative.
